Dugi otok · Sali, Božava and Telašćica

  • the outer island of the Zadar archipelago
  • Sali ≈ 17 NM from Biograd
  • harbours, a marina and buoys
  • Best: May, Jun, Sep

Dugi otok closes off the Zadar islands from the open sea. The villages with berths, water and power are on the inner coast, from Sali to Božava; the outer side is steep, apart from the sandy Sakarun in the north. In the south lies Telašćica Nature Park.

Dugi otok from the yacht

From Biograd to Sali is about 17 NM: round the southern tip of Pašman, then along the north side of Žut to the south-east of Dugi otok. The villages are on the inner, north-east coast; the outer side is steep and open to the sea, so do not choose it for the night.

  • Sali: the largest village and a harbour office; berths with water, power and toilets included, shops, ATM, post office and clinic.
  • Zaglav: the only fuel station on the island, on the pier in the harbour, a few kilometres north-west of Sali.
  • Brbinj: the ferry quay (Zadar – Brbinj) and berths with water and power; Brbinjšćica bay is one of the island’s safest anchorages.
  • Božava: a harbour in the north with berths, water and power; the base for Sakarun beach and the Veli Rat lighthouse.
  • Veli Rat: a marina in Pantera bay with reception and toilets; Pantera and neighbouring Čuna give good shelter in strong wind.

Sakarun lies on the north-west, outer side: about 300 m of white sand, and 250 m from the shore the sea is only 3.5 m deep. Buoys are laid for a swimming stop; in a maestral or westerly the anchorage is open, so spend the night in Božava or Veli Rat.

Take care. The harbours on the inner coast face the mainland, so a strong bora makes them uncomfortable. When DHMZ forecasts bora, stay in Veli Rat or in Telašćica; the jugo is less of a problem there.
Tip from the base. Spend the first night in Telašćica, the second in Sali, and fill up in Zaglav before you sail north along the island. For a week round the island see Dugi otok and Telašćica in 7 days.
